Being a good VO isn’t just about the voice.
Oh no…
- It’s about organisation
- It’s about preparation
- It’s about knowing your gear
𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦:
🎙️ You’re a voice over artist with your own studio.
💻 A client wants to join you online for a 60-minute live directed session.
⛓️💥 The platform 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 doesn’t work properly (𝘭𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘔𝘚 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 - 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘔𝘚 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴) - the audio keeps cutting out and the video is completely out of sync.

𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗔: 😱
❌ You spend the whole session struggling to understand each other.
❌ The client’s instructions are unclear and everyone's stressed out, and as a consequence your performance is subpar.
❌ You send the client what you did, but it’s not what they were after.

𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗕: 🤗
✅ You immediately recognise the problem, set up a different call, send a link, and within 2 minutes everyone has joined and it all works.
✅ You laugh together about the uselessness of MS Teams and nail the voice over in less than 30 minutes.
✅ You edit and send the audio and the client has their VO ready to use in under an hour.
• You help the client feel at ease
• You solve the problem for the client
• You save the client time (and money!)
This actually happened to me not so long ago - and I did, of course, go with Scenario B. 😊
When something like this happens, not only is the client delighted that you’re a professional who can deliver the goods, but they also see first hand that you don’t panic, you know what to do, and you do it with style.
• You are organised.
• You are prepared.
• You know your gear.

✌️😎
It's not just about the voice.
